Appian has released new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to automate complex work and accelerate app modernization.

New platform features embed powerful agents into processes and empower business users to modernize legacy apps, according to the announcement. The capabilities span Agent Studio, Appian Composer, and Data Fabric.

Appian is hosting Appian Europe 2025 in London this week, an annual event focused on process automation, AI, and digital transformation where business leaders share strategies for implementing AI and achieving enterprise-wide results.

Embedding agents directly into business processes

Agent Studio is now generally available following its preview at Appian World in April 2025, stated a press release. It empowers organizations to deploy Appian’s most advanced AI agents at scale.

Agents can reason, adapt to unexpected situations, and take action on enterprise data to automate even the most complex workflows. Their strength lies in inheriting Appian’s core platform capabilities, comprehensive data access, process awareness, and built-in governance, the firm said.

With Agent Studio, business users can define high-level objectives using natural language. Appian’s AI agents then leverage the platform’s data fabric and tools to determine the most effective course of action. Fully embedded within business processes, Appian agents ensure governance, transparency, and complete auditability of every action they take.

“Agent Studio demonstrates how AI and low-code can combine to extend human capacity in ways that matter most: reaching families faster, reducing administrative friction, and enabling clinicians to focus on what they do best – care,” according to said Ryan Cox, co-founder and VP of Acclaim Autism. “Agent Studio bridges the gap between business users and software engineers. By uploading our existing processes into the agent’s knowledge set, we quickly achieved reliable clinician-patient matches – a powerful result from a simple setup.”

AI-powered application modernization

Appian Composer is also now generally available, Appian announced. Composer revolutionizes the way organizations modernize their applications, enabling users of any skill level to transform ideas into functional apps in minutes through an AI-guided experience.

By automatically building an interactive blueprint for user stories, data models, processes, and user experiences, Appian Composer provides a collaborative workspace where business, IT, and AI teams can plan and design applications together, the vendor claimed. 

Data Fabric enhancements

Finally, Appian’s Data Fabric can now handle up to 50 million rows with five-times faster write throughput. Data Fabric also supports enhanced information security compliance via transparent data encryption. 

“Many organizations deployed ineffective and expensive, standalone AI chatbots in their back-office operations teams,” said Michael Beckley, CTO at Appian. “Appian takes a fundamentally different path. We embed specialized AI agents directly inside operations workflows where they deliver reliable results at massive scale, enabling real-world outcomes, like accurately processing tens of millions insurance quotes per year for one customer.”
