Using workflow automation to ensure seamless patient treatment

As a global healthcare service provider, Babylon Health processes tens of thousands of daily consultations with individual patients. Each consultation generates a complex, personalized workflow that combines manual and automated tasks to ensure each patient receives the right treatment and support.

However, due to personalized workflows created by every single consultation, Babylon Health was faced with a significant management challenge. Patient safety is a consistent consideration for the organization, and losing track of a patient during the process can significantly impact their personal health.

Babylon Health’s clinical workflows team decided that business process management (BPM) workflows allowed for the closest representation of clinical processes. Leveraging a workflow engine would allow them to focus on developing the workflows themselves instead of building their own; the visual language of the business process model and notation requires little-to-no technical knowledge, and allows non-technical stakeholders to visualize the end-to-end process.

The first deliverable for the organization’s clinical workflows team was designed around Camunda BPM from the beginning, making the implementation effort minimal. The integration of services across the business was straightforward because the team was easily able to build an application programming interface around Camunda modify specific components.

With patient safety being Babylon Health’s number one priority when designing processes, the organization automated this human workflow management. This ensured consistency of treatment across all patients, and created a seamless user experience capable of providing genuine value to patients and the business.
