Learn MoreAdaptability is the ultimate success skill
The willingness to adapt and change approach when things aren’t going as planned is crucial, Farah said. This is what separates high achievers from those who plateau, and it applies equally to business environments and personal development.
In this regard, defeats and setbacks provide more valuable learning opportunities than victories. The key is to analyze what went wrong, extract lessons and apply insights to future challenges, rather than dwelling on disappointment, Farah said.
Confidence grows when people understand and accept that making mistakes is essential for learning. Leaders should therefore create environments where failure is viewed as a steppingstone rather than a roadblock.
Effective leaders maintain solution-oriented mindsets in the face of setbacks, shifting focus to what can be learned and what actions can be taken to improve. Farah cited his own example of failing to win gold at the 2011 World Athletics Championships, explaining how it spurred him on to success at future events such as the 2012 Olympics in London.
“Perhaps if I didn’t lose that race in 20211, maybe I couldn’t have done as well as I did on London 2012. It’s all that learning – you take it and go, this is how I’m going to do it.”

The power of tech, data and analytics
Emerging technology, data and analytics are powerful tools in driving success, Farah said. This is playing out across the sporting and business landscape. “I think it’s a great opportunity. In order for us to go further, faster and better, it has to involve tech. We all want to be the fastest, the leanest, the quickest.”
Technology should enhance rather than complicate performance, with the most effective technological integration focusing on practical improvements that enhance decision-making without overwhelming the user with unnecessary complexity.
The key is selecting relevant information that supports your goals, rather than trying to track everything, Farah suggested. Different people need different levels of data complexity based on their working style.
“The biggest thing I’ve learned throughout my career is being able to understand yourself better than anyone else and understand your opposition better than they know themselves,” he said.
Despite vast technological advances, in-person interactions remain crucial for the meaningful exchange of ideas and building relationships. Physical gatherings continue to facilitate collaboration and innovation.
Success requires finding partners who are willing to listen, experiment and support your vision. Such relationships should be collaborative, encouraging ideas and being open to new approaches.
“Every problem has a solution,” Farah said. “How do we get in conversation with each other in a room, open up, talk about it and find a solution to the problem?”
