OpenAI has signed a government charter to boost digital transformation across Ireland.

The US-based artificial intelligence (AI) firm became the latest signatory to the Irish government’s Charter for Digital Inclusion, following a meeting between minister of state for AI and digital transformation Niamh Smyth and Emma Redmond, head of OpenAI Ireland.

OpenAI has committed to several pledges under the charter, including embedding digital inclusion principles into its products and policies and supporting government-led programs focused on digital transformation.

The Charter for Digital Inclusion aims to support public and private organizations to join efforts in ensuring equitable access to the use of digital technologies, services, and associated opportunities for everyone.

It is a set of commitments to which business and other organizations can sign up to maximize their efforts in contributing to bridging the digital gap by promoting basic digital skills, building awareness, and helping people get online.

OpenAI signed up to Commitments 1 to 5, focusing on investing in staff upskilling and inclusive workplaces, embedding digital-inclusion criteria into its products and corporate policies, and delivering government-facing programs under the OpenAI for Countries initiative.

“Ireland’s Charter for Digital Inclusion represents our commitment to ensuring that technology serves everyone in our society,” commented Smyth. “Digital inclusion is not just an aspiration, it is a necessity for our economic and social progress. I am dedicated to fostering partnerships that prioritize responsible, accessible, and human-centered approaches to digital transformation.”

Democratizing digital transformation

OpenAI’s participation in the charter reflects the type of collaborative approach needed to bring together businesses of all sizes, public bodies, and communities to deliver real, tangible benefits for all, Smyth added.

“By supporting SMEs and communities in their digital journey, we create a more resilient and inclusive economy where everyone can thrive.”

Redmond commented: “OpenAI is proud to further support Ireland’s vision of a digital future for all. We believe AI can expand opportunity, not limit it. Today’s commitment reflects our dedication to ensuring that individuals and businesses across Ireland can engage with AI safely, confidently, and beneficially.”
