Intelligent document processing (IDP) tools autonomously extract data from documents and transform it into structured, actionable and machine-readable information. They use a finely tuned combination of technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) models to classify, categorize and validate information with high levels of confidence and accuracy.

IDP expands on traditional document digitization methods such as optical character recognition (OCR), which has historically been used to convert printed text into digital format.

Although OCR remains a foundational element, today’s IDP solutions incorporate advanced technologies to analyze, extract and organize meaningful information from documents. By enhancing operational efficiency and providing actionable insights, IDP delivers substantial value to organizations aiming to gain a competitive edge.

IDP tools typically operate across four functions: document ingestion, data extraction, data normalization and verification and data export. IDP lies at the core of the operational workflow of many businesses today, particularly in document-heavy sectors such as financial, legal and healthcare.

Common IDP use cases include:

  • Invoice and payment processing
  • Contract management
  • Customer and employee onboarding
  • Compliance and regulatory reporting
  • Medical records management
  • Claims processing
  • Customer service and support

The IDP market is expected to grow to US$2.09 billion by 2026, according to Gartner. “The intelligent document processing market is expansive, with over 100 vendors, including from adjacent markets, offering full solutions or individual components,” read the recent Gartner Magic Quadrant for Intelligent Document Processing Solutions.
