Digital twin imagery

Digital twin technology can be a powerful enterprise-wide tool for organizations wanting to achieve business transformation.

Its ability to create virtual replicas of physical assets allows leaders to simulate real-world scenarios, predict outcomes, optimize performance and generally make more informed strategic decisions.

They create living and dynamic models of how a business operates, meaning that digital twins are much more advanced than just a piece of monitoring equipment. They can be critical to digital transformation initiatives across a range of industries, from manufacturing and logistics, to healthcare and financial services.

Digital twins are one of the major approaches businesses use to achieve process excellence, with almost 10 percent of surveyed organizations applying digital twins/process simulation techniques to enhance operational excellence (OPEX), according to PEX Network’s Global State of OPEX & business transformation 2024 report.

Keep reading to discover the top digital twin platforms that can help your organization achieve business transformation!

1. Siemens Xcelerator/Teamcenter Digital Twin

First on the list is one of the most mature digital twin ecosystems, from Siemens. Its platform spans product lifecycle management (PLM), manufacturing and operational performance. The Teamcenter platform enables companies to build comprehensive digital twins of products, factories and systems.

The platform includes simulation-driven design and IoT integration via MindSphere. According to Siemens, it  “accelerate[s] digital transformation and empower[s] innovation with secure, scalable solutions.”

2. IBM Digital Twin Exchange/Maximo

IBM’s digital twin functionality is provided through its Maximo Application Suite and Digital Twin Exchange marketplace. It helps businesses to predict equipment failures, reduce downtime and improve operational efficiency. This is done via the tools capability to combine IoT, artificial intelligence (AI) and asset performance management.

3. Oracle IoT Digital Twin

Oracle’s IoT Intelligent Applications include digital twin capabilities to track, monitor and analyse connected assets. It integrates with Oracle ERP and SCM systems, supporting predictive maintenance, supply chain optimization and asset lifecycle management as well.

4. PTC ThingWorx Digital Twin

Up next is PTC’s ThingWorx and IoT platform that powers digital twins which connect physical assets to digital models. It can perform predictive maintenance, anomaly detection and augmented reality. This helps employees to interact with twin data in immersive ways.

5. Microsoft Azure Digital Twins

Azure Digital Twins allows organizations to model entire environments, including factories, supply chains, buildings or even cities! It integrates with Microsoft’s AI and IoT stack to deliver real-time insights, simulation and optimization capabilities.

6. Ansys Twin Builder

Ansys Twin Builder focuses on physics-based simulation to enable organizations to design and validate digital twins of complex systems before deployment. It’s main offerings revolve around a model-based system, which engineers and integrates with IoT platforms, allowing for real-time data.

7. Bently Systems iTwin

iTwin is designed for infrastructure and enables organizations to build and manage their own digital twins of physical assets like bridges, railways and power grids. It emphasizes collaborative design, construction monitoring and operational optimization across large-scale infrastructure projects.

8. Altair SmartWorks and Digital Twin Solutions

Providing simulation-driven digital twin capabilities through its SmartWorks IoT platform and engineering suite, Altair helps organizations connect data from sensors with multiphysics simulations, enabling predictive maintenance, design optimization and performance monitoring.
