Often you do not have a real choice when taking on a leadership role with an established team. The management challenge is how to move people from C-A categories. An area often over-looked is how well leaders develope their teams and the contribution they are then capable of making. A good leader will develope at least 2 people who can cover their role if needed. Creating opportunities for people to gain experience by allowing them to perform a leadership role, with coaching, feedback and support if needed, is part of good people management practice.
