Data governance in AI report cover

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the business landscape at an unprecedented scale. Behind the momentum lies a critical enabler of sustainable AI success – data governance.

Since its explosive rise in 2022, generative AI has become a strategic priority for organizations, driving automation, efficiency, compliance and customer engagement to transform operations. Generative AI use jumped from 55 percent in 2023 to 75 percent in 2024, according to research from Microsoft and analyst firm IDC.

Meanwhile, Gartner predicts that, by 2026, more than 80 percent of enterprises will have used generative AI models and/or deployed generative AI-enabled applications in production environments, up from less than 5 percent in 2023.

As businesses accelerate generative AI adoption, strong data governance becomes non-negotiable. What’s more, with the shift from generative AI to agentic AI, the importance of data governance will only intensify.

However, over half of organizations do not measure data quality, while 60 percent of businesses will fail to realize the value of their AI plans due to poor data governance, according to Gartner.

Many organizations lack effective data governance strategies generally, let alone those specifically focused on the integration of emerging AI. This is a trend that must be addressed if businesses are to extract meaningful and consistent value from AI adoption.
