Vienna Airport is enhancing operations and sustainability with digital twin technology in collaboration with software provider Nemetschek Group.
Vienna Airport will implement Nemetschek’s dRofus dTwin solution as its Airport BIM & Facility Integration Platform (ABIGAIL), aiming to optimize operations and asset management across the airport’s extensive facilities and lifecycle stages.
Vienna Airport hopes to optimize process and information sharing through comprehensive digital replicas of the airport’s infrastructure in a central platform that connects and harmonizes all process relevant building and asset information from multiple sources, systems, and stakeholders, according to the announcement.
With more than 31 million passengers, Vienna Airport is the largest Austrian airport and among the top European airports.

Digitalization is now indispensable in large construction projects and, together with the Nemetschek Group, Vienna Airport is intensively driving forward the digital mapping of its infrastructure, said Dr Günther Ofner, CFO of Vienna Airport.
“With the implementation of the ABIGAIL platform, all airport buildings and areas will be digitally recorded in the future – Vienna Airport will thus receive a digital twin. This will enable us to manage the construction and operation of the extensive airport infrastructure even more efficiently and sustainably.”
With the planned expansion of Terminal 3 in 2027, Vienna Airport will create a future-oriented ambience with 70,000 m² on three levels, a new central security checkpoint, additional gates, comfortable lounges, and a spacious and experience-oriented shopping and restaurant area, with dRofus dTwin being used for this purpose.
“We are delighted that Vienna Airport is now expanding the use of our solution across its entire lifecycle. Our software platform for digital twins is particularly well-suited for complex ecosystems such as airports”, said Sunil Pandita, chief division officer planning and design and digital twin business unit at the Nemetschek Group.

Tackling the challenges of operating an airport
Operating an airport is challenging, especially when dealing with numerous different buildings, commented Stefan Kovacs, head of planning, construction and asset management at Vienna Airport.
“However, model-based operations management in ABIGAIL offers numerous advantages, as existing and new information can be precisely combined and utilized. This gives us a constant, up-to-date overview of the structural and technical infrastructure, which we can then incorporate into construction projects and operations.”
Nemetschek’s digital twin platform leverages open standards to integrate with Vienna Airport’s existing ecosystem and connect via open interfaces and APIs to all relevant building systems and solutions.
“By linking all relevant information, new foundations are created. This allows connections to be better recognized, enabling faster, more informed decisions to be made based on this information,” according to Christoph Eichler, CEO of VIE Build, a subsidiary of Vienna Airport, which is leading the project.
This is precisely what Nemetschek’s digital twin platform is designed for, added Dr Jimmy Abualdenien, head of digital twin product at Nemetschek.: “Technically agnostic and as open as possible, to truly show the entire built asset with all data across its entire lifecycle and enable better operations and decision-making.”
