The United States Postal Service (USPS) handles over 160 billion pieces of mail every year, which works out to approximately 40% of the volume of mail sent in the world. And with over half a million employees and 1.3 billion miles driven annually by its carriers and truck drivers, you can see why operational excellence needs to be a key focus.
As the pressures upon the postal service change - e.g. decreased mail volume, legislative burdens, tough economic conditions - the requirement to increase efficiency and process excellence has increased. At the end of 2011 the postal service thus introduced a continuous improvement program based on Lean Six Sigma. Since the start of the program they have achieved $8.1M in realized savings and estimate a further $58M from projects that are currently in flight.
