Auburn University announced a new Lean Six Sigma study abroad program. Engineering and business students can study abroad and earn an internationally recognized credential via a partnership with the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) and Schaeffler, a leading global manufacturer headquartered in Schweinfurt, Germany.
Through the International Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Program, junior, senior, and graduate students will complete coursework with Auburn University faculty before traveling abroad to apply their learning in an international setting.
The three-week project combines online and in-person learning with hands-on project work.

Students will begin with asynchronous Lean Systems training through Auburn University’s Tiger Motors lab. After arriving in Germany, they will continue their studies at THWS, focusing on Six Sigma methodologies in the classroom and then applying those concepts hands-on within Schaeffler’s manufacturing facility through real-world improvement projects.
“This program is truly unique because students don’t just gain valuable international experience, they also earn a credential that will set them apart in job interviews and future career opportunities,” said Tom Devall, professor and director of automotive manufacturing initiatives in the department of industrial and systems engineering at Auburn University.
The program includes cultural excursions throughout Germany’s historic Franconia region, offering students a chance to experience the country’s rich history and traditions alongside their academic work.
“By partnering with THWS and Schaeffler, we’re giving students a powerful combination of academic, cultural, and industry experience,” Devall said. “They’ll learn from global experts, collaborate with German engineering students, and work inside one of the world’s leading manufacturing companies.”
The program is a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for students to experience German culture, collaborate with global industry professionals, and strengthen their mastery of Lean and Six Sigma principles, all while earning an internationally recognized certification, Devall said.
Lean Six Sigma remains central to process excellence and business transformation
Despite being decades old, Lean Six Sigma concepts and approaches remain central to modern process excellence and business transformation.
In September, a research study found that Lean Six Sigma principles and “green culture” are crucial in enhancing circular manufacturing capabilities. Both foster a mindset shift toward sustainability and resource efficiency, ultimately driving the onset of the circular economy ecosystem, according to the study.
In August, the University of Kansas (KU) revived its in-person Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification training, marking the first time it has been offered face-to-face since before 2020. The university announced that the five-day course would be held in September and October at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park. The program will continue to be available online for those who prefer a virtual format.
In April, the latest iteration of an ongoing partnership between the United States Military Academy West Point and Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD) – part of the US Army Communications-Electronics Command – saw three senior groups of cadets finished Lean Six Sigma Green Belt projects. The initiative highlights how Lean Six Sigma is enhancing combat readiness.
