The Trouble with Traditional Management: Interview with Statoil's VP of Performance Management

The modern management mantra has typically been that if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. However, Albert Einstein once said that "not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts". It’s the modern managers’ dilemma – how do you manage people to high levels of performance and how do you make sure that everyone’s eye is focussed on the right ball?

In this Process Perspectives podcast, Bjarte Bogsnes, Vice President of Performance Management Development at Norwegian oil and gas company Statoil, argues that there’s often a gap between what companies say they want to achieve and how they act to try and achieve it in their management processes. Statoil has come up with a new approach to budgeting that he believes helps to close that gap.
