How healthcare set an automation example for other industries
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts embraced automation and is inspiring other industries to follow suit
Lee Green, chief architect at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, admitted that the healthcare sector has not been at the “leading edge” of automation technology over the past decade. In a presentation for PEX Live: Enterprise Architecture 2022, however, he provided a case study that demonstrated how applications in healthcare can motivate other industries to embrace automation.
The digital transformation journey for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts started with what Green terms as “the low-hanging fruit”, referring to the automation of manual processes. He says the next step is to look at the information that has been gleaned so far and identify new ways to innovate with AI and machine learning technologies.
Across industries, including healthcare, Green says “the proof of the pudding” has been the positive impact automation technology has made to processes and outcomes during the Covid-19 pandemic, which sped up digital transformation for many organizations. The successful introduction of these solutions has given credibility to IT departments, helping them win management buy-in for further investment in transformative technology.
