Runner Up for Best Process Improvement Project Under 90 Days

Scottsdale Healthcare is Arizona’s largest nonprofit community based healthcare system, comprised of three hospitals with over 800 licensed beds and 62 operating rooms. In May of 2010, two patients developed stage III-IV pressure ulcers while being cared for in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea campus - prompting nursing staff to realize that the the Shea hospital ICU’s pressure ulcer prevalence rates had been consistently above the national benchmark set by National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI).

In this downloadable case study, Scottsdale Healthcare presents how the process improvement teams assembled a multidisciplinary task force to tackle the problem through A3/PDSA and evidence-based practice standards. The project resulted in a significant reductionin patients discharged with hospital acquired pressure ulcers as well as an estimated potential cost savings of over $5 million (USD).
