Mobile technology has revolutionized not only the way we communicate, but the way we live our lives. More important perhaps, it has and continues to revolutionize our business processes, from ordering online (via laptop, tablet or mobile) to mobile CRM systems, the technology continues to speed up our lives in new and interesting ways.

Ahead of BPM Open House 2014, PEX Network spoke to Gustavo Gomez, CEO of Bizagi about the potential mobile technology holds in the BPM space, and how a trend towards free BPM technology suites is changing the business model.

Craig Sharp: Hello, and welcome to Process Perspectives, a podcast series produced by the Process Excellence Network. PEX Network is an online and events community of process professionals. I’m your host Craig Sharp, editor of Pexnetwork.com. Coming up in today’s program we’re talking to Gustavo Gomez, CEO of Bizagi, about the enterprise mobility and the pricing approach to BPM software suites that his company takes. Bizagi are an independently owned software developer who offer three BPM models: a modeler, design studio and the Bizagi engine. Gustavo, welcome, and thank you for joining us today.

Gustavo Gomez: Good morning, Craig. Thank you for having me here.

Craig Sharp: Mobility is a key topic during Bizagi’s BPM presentation, do you feel mobility is an issue that has yet to be addressed by the majority of companies?

Gustavo Gomez: Many companies have implemented BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policies which enable employees to connect with productivity tools such as email or Microsoft Office, but are still struggling to connect all those devices to their organizational process.

Craig Sharp: Do you feel a lack of mobility within the industry is currently having an adverse effect on business, or perhaps not allowing companies to realize their full potential?

Gustavo Gomez: I think it’s more the case that organizations need to extend the reach of their mobile devices to connect with processes, in such a way that workers can work effectively.

Craig Sharp: Okay, thank you. Do you feel enterprise mobility is more important and practical in some industries than others, or are the key principles transferrable across most industries?

Gustavo Gomez: At first glance one thinks of a specific industry, such as healthcare or insurance that need the mobility charge, but I do believe that mobility has the potential to redefine any industry. When you think of your processes with a mobile first approach, they drastically change and reshape your whole organization.

Craig Sharp: And Bizagi offers two components free of charge, what was the thinking behind that?

Gustavo Gomez: The purpose was to align our business model with the market expectations. We offer the full Enterprise software for free so people can develop finer systems before taking them to production with our paid for Bizagi Engine. It’s a risk free approach for our potential customers, and a unique business model in the Enterprise software space.

Craig Sharp: What sets Bizagi apart from other companies with similar pricing models?

Gustavo Gomez: The main difference is that we offer two products, completely for free where people can build their process applications, without paying a cent. And only once they want to deploy them into the production environment, into the design engine, which is what I mentioned before, do they need to pay.

Craig Sharp: Where should a business start if they’re just embarking on the search for a software solution that meets their needs?

Gustavo Gomez: The beginning of the journey is a cultural one. That is, to start thinking and describing the organization and the challenges in process terms. Starting, I think, such conversations around the business process model, and using what’s known as BPMN, helps enormously. Bizagi offers our key modeler and it works at no cost for these tools.

Craig Sharp: That’s all from us today here at the Process Excellence Network. I’d like to thank Gustavo for joining us.

Gustavo Gomez: Thank you, Craig.

Craig Sharp: And as always, don’t forget that for additional process related resources including podcasts, articles, webinars and more, log onto www.pexnetwork.com. Thank you, goodbye.
