Sandy Abel

Sandy Abel, MBA, LSSBB, is the Assistant Vice President of Operational Excellence at Space Coast Credit Union. With a knack for making complex concepts approachable, she champions a culture of continuous improvement without requiring a PhD in technical jargon. After all, who needs to sound overly technical when you can make Lean Six Sigma sound like a trendy coffee order? With her pragmatic leadership, Sandy mixes just the right amount of levity into her public speaking, engaging her audience and reminding them that operational excellence doesn’t have to be intimidating. She’s also known for transforming an informal program into a structured framework that cleverly uses operational excellence and business process management principles aligned with maturity modeling—because if you’re going to do it, you might as well do it right!

Wednesday, Jan 27: OPEX & Continuous Improvement Day 2

12:30 PM AN SCCU CASE STUDY: THE HUMAN SIDE OF BUILDING A BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

This session shares SCCU's journey building a custom Business Management System inspired by ISO, quality management, Lean, and business process management principles while adapting them to a relationship-driven credit union culture. Rather than focusing on the framework itself, this case study explores the people, resistance, compromises, and lessons learned behind the effort. Along the way, SCCU inventoried nearly 2,000 documents, documented nearly 200 procedures, trained more than 250 leaders in quality governance resulting in 96% approval of submitted documentation, and created the organization's first enterprise view of how work is performed.
• How SCCU adapted ISO, quality management, and Lean concepts into a practical operating model
• Lessons learned balancing process discipline with the human realities of a relationship-driven service culture
• Practical approaches for turning tribal knowledge into organizational knowledge through documentation, governance, and standardization
