Hybrid intelligence: To automate or not to automate

Wil van der Aalst | 03/01/2021

In recent years, the line between tasks that humans and machines can perform has become blurred as the two become increasingly intertwined. With technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and speech recognition becoming increasingly advanced, many tasks that traditionally would require a skilled human worker can now be automatically completed by machines.

"Godfather" of process mining Prof.dr.ir. Wil van der Aalst, who will be a key speaker at PEX Live: Process Mining 2021, is well aware of the progression of automation technologies and in this paper explores a new concept, hybrid intelligence. It accepts that there are many instances where machines will outperform humans across a range of tasks, but there are some tasks requiring common sense or contextual knowledge that still need humans. In implementing a hybrid intelligence model, organizations can seek to combine the best of both worlds with regard to humans and machines.

In this paper, Van der Aalst breaks down the concept of hybrid intelligence and takes a deep dive into process mining and robotic process automation (RPA), analyzing how the two interact under and overarching hybrid intelligence model. It also outlines what is new in the fields of RPA and process mining and explains why the latter should be applied before and after the former has been implemented.
