The Ultimate Transformation Tips: 5 Do's & Don'ts - Interview with Jacques McGregor, VP of Digital Transformation at Marathon Petroleum Corporation

11/23/2023

Here is what Jacques had to say!

DO'S

Senior Sponsor - Secure sponsorship from the most senior leader possible, ideally the CEO, to champion the transformation.

Business Leader - Identify a business leader that is tech-savvy to lead your digital or business transformation. You’re focusing on transforming the way your organization operates to succeed in the marketplace. The leader you pick needs to understand how the organization runs, how it makes money, and what competitive pressures it’s facing.

Culture - It is critically important to focus on your organization’s culture – what are its strengths and weaknesses, what needs to change and what will that take? As Peter Drucker said – “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”.

Case for change - Make a compelling case for change in language that resonates with the hearts and minds of employees at all levels of the organization. You’re trying to secure discretionary effort from employees – not only in supporting the transformation, but also in adopting the changes being implemented (i.e. the new way of doing business). It is natural for people to question why change is needed – and what’s in it for them.

Break through the permafrost - There is a level of leaders called the ‘permafrost’ who can stall or outright block most transformation efforts. You have to win them over and ensure they are advocating for the transformation instead of working against it or even simply not supporting it.
