John Murphy serves as Chief Mechanical Officer of Strategy for CSX Transportation. A 32-year veteran of the company, Murphy began his career as a Transportation Trainmaster Trainee for Chessie System Railroads in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since then, he has held senior roles in corporate Finance, Operations, and Operational Excellence.
In his current role, John drives the Mechanical strategic capital investment plan, the strategic workforce planning initiatives, and the organizational transformation toward an asset based structure utilizing business intelligence platforms to improve the reliability and availability of the company’s rolling asset fleets.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of St. Thomas. He also earned a Master’s degree in business administration from the University of Montana, and conducted post-graduate work in transportation and logistics at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
Murphy holds both Six Sigma Blackbelt and Master Blackbelt certifications. He is a regular speaker at continuous improvement, asset management, and industrial engineering conferences. He currently services as an advisor and quality judge to the International Quality and Productivity Center/Process Excellence council and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for St. Thomas Academy, St. Paul, MN.
