Yarra Trams operates the fastest growing passenger mode in Melbourne. The next 10 years sees an unprecedented investment in public transport infrastructure in Melbourne. Around 75 per cent of our network is shared roadway – so while this construction work is underway, this will have significant impacts on our network operations.

For us, operational excellence means optimising our performance, and then embedding business improvement. To do that, we are on the journey of standardising and formalising our systems and processes whilst navigating the natural disconnect between the faster-paced strategy and business planning side with the slow-turning wheel of performance improvement within the day-of-operations environment.

The latter environment is often managing a ‘crisis’, costing too much energy to enable response to issues in the chaotic operating environment. Limited time to work ‘on the system’ to really lift and improve operational efficiency - too much focus in the system.
