Dear Process Excellence professionals ... what is the difference between operational excellence and process excellence? Has anyone tried to define them? Or are these defined in any textbook as different? I can't see how we can achieve Operational excellence without process excellence and I don't see a need to drive process excellence if we do not need Operational excellence. I look forward to any views on this. Thank you, LynnC

Excellence means achieving and sustaining superior performance to meet or exceed needs of all stakeholders. Since stakeholders need varies from organization to organization-every organization need to define what operational excellence means to them.

The company I work for looks at Operational Excellence as a mixture of 3 parts. 1) The company's progress toward meeting its strategic goals. 2) Innovation of the company (Leading the industry). 3) How our customers perceive us (meeting their needs and expectations). As far as process excellence, it is not part of the company's language as the work my group is really in its infancy and beginning to gain traction. I personally would define it as a company that has processes that are supporting operational excellence in a positive manner.

Isn't it odd how we get our minds all tied up in nuances of language? I agree with you, Lynn, that operational excellence is a result of efforts made to improve process performance. Bottom line: whatever we call it, improving process performance with an eye toward achieving goals important to the organization will result in operational excellence. Just stay focused on what needs to be done to move the organization closer to its strategic goals (assuming of course that the organization really does have strategic goals and not just 'the non-strategy' that John Hamalian recently posted on)!

You might have operational excellence withou process excellence, and the same, you could have process excellence without operational excellence. The excellence of a process is related with the design (in a global sense) of the process -it is the theorical part. The excellence of operation is related with the resources (mainly human resources) you use to put in practice the process -it is the practical part. So, in summary, you can have operational excellence without optimized processes, because you have the right resources but not the process improved. And also, you can have proces excellence (you have improved), but the resources to do it aren't available or adequate. Of course, both situations are not desirable, but they are more frequent that you might think. I hope this suits you. Regards.

As one who has the title Operations process excellence we covered both (LOL). My opinion is that there is little difference other than branding. Both deal with CI in processes using the PI toolset. Cheers
